{"id":1976,"date":"2024-08-27T14:29:31","date_gmt":"2024-08-27T19:29:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/voterpurgeproject.org\/?p=1976"},"modified":"2024-08-27T14:29:33","modified_gmt":"2024-08-27T19:29:33","slug":"texas-removes-1-million-people-from-voter-rolls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/voterpurgeproject.org\/index.php\/2024\/08\/27\/texas-removes-1-million-people-from-voter-rolls\/","title":{"rendered":"Texas removes 1 million people from voter rolls"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/author\/elizabeth-crisp\/\">Elizabeth Crisp<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; 08\/27\/24 12:51 PM ET<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than a million people have been removed from Texas\u2019s voter registration rolls since the last presidential election, the state announced Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Texas Gov.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/greg-abbott\/\">Greg Abbott\u00a0<\/a>(R) said in a statement that the removals represent an effort to \u201cprotect the right to vote and to crackdown on illegal voting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese reforms have led to the removal of over one million ineligible people from our voter rolls in the last three years, including noncitizens, deceased voters, and people who moved to another state,\u201d Abbott said. \u201cIllegal voting in Texas will never be tolerated. We will continue to actively safeguard Texans\u2019 sacred right to vote while also aggressively protecting our elections from illegal voting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>About half of the voters removed have died, requested to be be taken off or are living in another state, based on figures from the governor\u2019s office. Nearly 7,000 were noncitizens who had registered illegally, and about 6,000 were convicted felons unable to vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>About 463,000 were on what Texas calls its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/webservices.sos.state.tx.us\/document-share\/files\/Suspense%20List%20Mass%20Cancellation%20Process.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201csuspense list,\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;where counties place voters who don\u2019t respond to requested certification forms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The removal effort is part of a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/state-watch\/594393-thousands-of-mail-ballots-rejected-under-new-texas-voting-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sweeping package<\/a>&nbsp;of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/capitol.texas.gov\/tlodocs\/872\/billtext\/pdf\/SB00001F.pdf#navpanes=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">voting restrictions<\/a>&nbsp;the Texas Legislature passed after the 2020 presidential election. At the time,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/gov.texas.gov\/news\/post\/governor-abbott-signs-election-integrity-legislation-into-law\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Abbott said the law<\/a>&nbsp;would make it \u201ceasier to vote and harder to cheat\u201d in the Lone Star State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Critics&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/changing-america\/respect\/accessibility\/3665190-these-are-the-hardest-states-to-vote-in\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">argue it disproportionately<\/a>&nbsp;affects voters of color and voters with disabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the governor\u2019s office, of the nearly 6,500 noncitizens removed from the voter rolls, about 1,930 have a voter history. Those cases will be referred to the Attorney General\u2019s office for possible felony charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Texas, along with other mostly Republican-controlled states,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/gop%20lawmakers%20seek%20tougher%20voting%20rules%20after%20record%20turnout\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">passed a raft<\/a>&nbsp;of new&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brennancenter.org\/our-work\/research-reports\/voting-laws-roundup-january-2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">voting restrictions<\/a>&nbsp;after President Biden beat former President Trump in the 2020 election, which saw a 50-year record turnout and a surge in mail-in and early ballots. Several local jurisdictions, including Harris County, Texas\u2019s most populous county, had adopted new access measures during that election cycle in response to the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among other provisions, the Texas law that has allowed the removal of a million voters also sets statewide voting hours, prohibits drive-through voting methods that were used for safety during the coronavirus outbreak and gives poll watchers more access to observe the election process.
